Some AI girlfriend apps are mobile-only. Others are web-only. Most work on both but offer different experiences. Here's what you gain and lose on each platform โ€” and which apps work best where.

Why Some Apps Are Platform-Limited

EVA AI and Anima AI (mobile only): Built as mobile-first apps. No web version means no desktop access. If you prefer typing on a keyboard, these aren't for you.

Candy AI and DreamGF (web only): Apple and Google's app store policies restrict adult content. Apps with NSFW features often can't get approved for native mobile apps, so they're web-only (or PWA). Candy AI's PWA works on mobile browsers but lacks push notifications and feels less polished than a native app.

Phone Advantages

  • Voice chat feels natural: Holding your phone to your ear for AI voice calls feels more like a real conversation than talking to a laptop
  • Push notifications: Native apps can send proactive messages from your AI companion (Kupid AI does this well)
  • Always available: Quick chats during commutes, breaks, or before bed
  • Camera integration: Some apps let you share photos directly

Desktop Advantages

  • Better for long roleplay: Typing extended roleplay scenarios is much faster on a keyboard
  • Larger screen for images: AI-generated images look better on a bigger display
  • Multi-tasking: Keep the chat open in a browser tab while doing other things
  • Privacy: Less likely to have someone glance at your screen on a desktop than a phone in public

Our Recommendation

Use phone for: voice calls, quick daily chats, proactive companion messages. Use desktop for: extended roleplay sessions, image-heavy interactions, character customization. The best apps โ€” Veridia, Character.AI, Replika, Nomi AI โ€” work on both, so you can switch based on context.

The Platform Shapes the Habit

Phone use tends to create short, frequent emotional check-ins: voice notes, quick replies, bedtime conversations, and notifications that pull the companion into the user's day. Desktop use is better for long roleplay sessions, character editing, comparing image outputs, and writing detailed prompts. Neither is universally better; they train different habits.

There is also a policy reason many adult-leaning companion apps feel better on the web than in native app stores. Web apps can offer broader content policies and faster updates, while mobile apps get smoother notifications, microphone access, and payments. Choose based on whether convenience or feature freedom matters more.
